This isn’t your typical hack-and-slash adventure – it’s a methodical descent into darkness that treats necromancy not as a power fantasy, but as a genuine moral and psychological journey.

The Necromancer’s Tale Review – A Beautiful Story Driven RPG
The Necromancer’s Tale is a beautiful narrative-driven gothic RPG firmly rooted in reality that explores the descent of a noble into the dark arts. Interactions have meaning. Choices have meaning. Almost everything you do in this game is impactful as The Necromancer’s Tale does an amazing job at making the world feel alive and reactive. The level of detail given to each NPC and how they interact with you is astounding. Filled with moral decisions, tough choices, and a truly well-written story, the developers at Psychic Software crafted a unique and eerie gem of a game.

Out now, The Necromancer's Tale is basically gothic Disco Elysium with combat.
The Necromancer's Tale is a dense, turn-based marvel, a historical, gothic RPG which appears to be just as ambitious as its inspirations.
Since Disco Elysium's release in 2019, nothing else has quite matched it. To be sure, there's been some fantastic RPGs since then. Baldur's Gate 3 is a tactical and story-telling marvel. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is an incredible throwback to the golden age of Final Fantasy. Metaphor ReFantazio is a dense JRPG with a vivid fantasy world. But the exact blend of storytelling and world-building Disco Elysium provided still stands apart. However, a few games are looking to live up to its now storied legacy. One such game is The Necromancer's Tale, a story-driven, gothic RPG with a complex magic system.

Last month, we previewed what to expect from this creative and exciting new indie RPG from Psychic Software, one of the first of its kind to tackle a story around the gothic art of necromancy. As of June 27, the game officially has a release date, as well as a deep dive into the gameplay mechanics of the upcoming dark fantasy. For those who loved Disco Elysium, this entry may feel very nostalgic to you.

"400,000 words of hand-written narrative and lore," to be precise, alongside hand-drawn portraits for 180+ NPCs. "We have not used any generative AI in the game", say developers Psychic Software. Good by me. If I wanted to engage with a pallid, grotesque simulacrum of something real, I'd raise another zombie.
